Sunday Comics: Ultimate Hulk Annual #1 (Dec 2008); You know how fan boys are always speculating on why the Hulk’s pants stay on when he transforms? Well, in the Ultimate Universe, they don’t…and this causes a problem when he wants service at Appletite’s. They have a strict “No Shirt, No Shoes, No Pants, No Service” policy…and the Hulk is naked and hungry for pancakes. Enter Zarda, Power Princess from the Squadron Supreme Universe who happens to be eating at the same diner in an attempt to mingle among the little folk.
Since Power Princess is an analog of Wonder Woman (as Squadron Supreme is an analog of the Justice League) this book basically answers the question “What would happen if Wonder Woman fought the Hulk?”
And they tear it up….a light entertaining read with more than capable pencils by Ed McGuinness and Marko Djurdjevic and a quick page turning story by Jeph Loeb. You’ll go through it as quickly as Hulk goes through underwear although the ending is eye-rolling inducing.
For those not familiar with either the Ultimate Universe or Squadron Supreme Universe, no previous reading is required since you would get the gist of the characters from the get go…Hulk likes to Smash and Power Princess likes to fight. For new comic book readers altogether, it would just re-affirm their belief that comics have no substance and it’s just about people trying to smash each other’s heads in.
Sunday Comics: Now reading: Ultimatum; A five issue series where everything in the Ultimate Marvel Universe comes to a head!. New York is devastated by a disaster, Eastern Europe is in the throes of an Ice Age, volcanoes in the Amazon, dogs and cats…and one man is to blame. The surviving heroes, and a villain or two, band together to confront the ultimate evil.
Written by Jeph Loeb and art by David Finch…this five issue series offers gobs of death, blood and destruction…and further proves everyone in the Ultimate Universe is a D-bag!
A derail from your usual programming here at Show & Tell; but please don’t tune out. My sister and I wanted to put together something in light of the recent earthquakes and tsunami that’ve affected Japan, so here goes:
On March 11, 2011, Japan was devastated by one of the worst earthquakes…
