Today is the debut of the new 52’s Wonder Woman #1. This is the fourth official #1 of the series. Here is a look back at some at those number one issues and some unofficial “firsts” as well
That’s the first appearance of Wonder Woman in comics so a good place to start, but that’s …
Recently, I was randomly perusing the Internet when I came across two articles. The first was on Cracked.com; Hollywood’s 5 Saddest Attempts at Feminism and the second on CNN Geek Out, Where’s My Wonder Woman Movie? by Erika Peterman (@EPeterman)
At first glance, two totally unrelated articles, written 3 years apart even. But Cracked does seem to answer why there shouldn’t be a Wonder Woman movie. Hollywood would just suck at it.
I love Wonder Woman! I have action figures, statues, graphic novels, comics, prose novels DVD’s and video games of the Amazon Princess all over the house. My daughters and I enjoy her adventures together and you would think we would be the first in line for a big screen adventure of the Princess of Power. But if they can’t do it right, I would rather not see it at all.
Hollywood, generally speaking, is very set in their old fashioned ways. Their modern mythology is full of iconic male heroes ranging from Indiana Jones to James Bond but very, very few female heroes. What few female characters they have, they are hardly worth admiring. The overall message Hollywood has sent out is that a woman cannot be happy or be fulfilled unless she is married. If she is a successful business woman, she is a bitch and unhappy unless she has a man. Actually, I think there are more female villains in movie history than female heroes.
There are even fewer female actors that have the box office mojo to carry an adventure film, not to mention a superhero movie. Quick, name a female action star. You just thought of Angelina Jolie, right? Quick, name another female action star. Took you a while…who’d you come up with? Sarah Michelle Gellar? Sorry, she’s a TV action star…whole different type of animal. Carrie Ann Moss? That was 10 years ago…what else has she done? Natalie Portman? Keira Knightly? Nope they played second…nay, THIRD fiddle to their co-stars.
Hollywood considers putting a potential franchise in the hands of an unknown is too risky. Hollywood spends a lot of time and money on marketing a movie. Their core audience are males, they can’t see Wonder Woman action figures being sold to their core audience.
Hollywood is incapable and lacks the resources to give the Wonder Woman movie the respect and justice she and her audience deserves. Wonder Woman is a capable, respected character within the DC Universe. She gives both Superman and Batman pause, she is the strength of the DCU. Hollywood just doesn’t get it. They can’t even make a movie about a prostitute right.
“You don’t see the fish? Right there…just a little closer
